CURRENT COURSES
Theory Course (Certification Part 1 of 2):
Theoretical training based on the CAN/CSA Z614 Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards.
Course objective: to learn and understand the technical requirements contained within the CSA Standards Document.
This course will help you:
• understand the CAN/CSA Z614 Standards
• identify hazards and equipment not in compliance with CSA Standards
• understand inspection requirements and process
• manage risk and reduce liability
Who should attend: owner/operators, health inspectors, daycare staff, maintenance/public works staff for schools, municipalities, housing complexes and other areas that contain public playspaces, private inspectors and contractors, manufacturers, installers, parks staff, insurance agents etc.

Practical Course (Certification Part 2 of 2):
Practical, hands-on training on applying the CAN/CSA Z614 Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards and how to perform an audit.
Course objective: to gain an understanding of the application of the CSA Standards and be able to evaluate compliance of playspaces and equipment.
This course will help you:
• take into consideration factors that affect playground safety beyond the CSA Standards
• evaluate existing play structures for compliance with the CSA standards
• complete a written inspection report
• provide recommendations for upgrading equipment to comply with the CSA standards with the understanding of safety and cost implications
• identify and implement an effective inspection and maintenance program
Who should attend: owner/operators, health inspectors, daycare staff, maintenance/public works staff for schools, municipalities, housing complexes and other areas that contain public playspaces, private inspectors and contractors, manufacturers, installers, parks staff, insurance agents etc.
The Practical Course is available only in the classroom.

Online Recertification:
An online recertification exam available to those who need to recertify their CPRA Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification and who have already completed both the Theory course and the Practical course.

Online Recertification Exam Preparation Course:
This online course is designed to help participants brush up their playground safety knowledge before writing the Online Recertification Exam. Evidence shows participants who take this course have a high degree of success on the Recertification Exam.

Inspection and Maintenance Course (Non-Certification Course):
This course will focus specifically on the maintenance and inspection aspect of playgrounds. Participants will gain an understanding of the difference between inspection and maintenance, the difference between an inspection and an audit, strategies and examples for maintaining playgrounds, how to address and make minor and major repairs that are required, types of tools needed, tricks of the trade, and much more.
Course objective: to gain a clear understanding of different levels of inspection and maintenance and be able to perform daily maintenance so that the playspace and equipment may be kept to an acceptable, safe, standard of care.
Who should attend: maintenance staff for daycares, custodians, public works staff, private contractors, owner/operators, superintendents (schools, apartment complexes and additional facilities with public playspaces).

Accessibility Course (Non-Certification Course):
Training based on Annex H from the CAN/CSA Z614-2007 Children’s Playspaces and Equipment and the American Disabilities Act.
Course objective: to learn and understand the technical requirements of designing, installing, inspecting and maintaining an accessible playspace for special needs users.
This course will help you:
• Understand why accessible playspaces are important
• Cost differences of operating an accessible versus traditional playspace
• Learn how to design, install, inspect and maintain an accessible playspace
• Understand the rationale and intent of Annex H from CAN/CSA Z614
• Discuss common design mistakes and understanding play value
• Understand the requirements for above ground and ground level play components
• Understand the Annex H specifications for:
o Acceptable types of protective surfacing
o Accessible routes
o Transfer systems
o Ramps and slopes
o Changes in elevation
Who should attend: owner/operators of playground equipment, park designers, landscape architects, health inspectors, maintenance staff/public works staff for schools and municipalities, private inspection firms, play equipment manufacturers and sales representatives, etc.

Basic Course (Non-Certification Course):
The Introductory to Playground Safety Course is designed for those who are just entering this area of responsibility or simply need to gain a broad understanding of the issues relating to playground safety without requiring a complete knowledge of the CSA Standards which is provided through the certification courses.
Course objective: to gain a general understanding of the basics as it relates to the CSA Standards, policies, practices, available resources, legal liability, etc.
Who should attend: playground leaders, daycare providers, school administrators/trustees, parent groups, playground committees etc.

Train-the-Trainer Course:
Train-the-Trainer is a three day course that provides participants with an understanding of the CPSI course materials, operations and practices, an understanding of the needs and challenges in an adult education environment and different teaching strategies to ensure students gain a full understanding of the material presented to them.
Course objective: gain the ability to train (teach) others in all aspects of playground safety, including each of the CPSI courses.
This course will only be offered once or twice a year, depending on demand. The course will be offered to individuals through an invitation process. There is no registration fee for this course; however, participants are responsible for their own travel and resource document costs. Participants must have experience presenting, display a strong understanding of the playground safety standards and a desire to teach CPSI courses. There is no guarantee that an opportunity to instruct CPSI courses will result from attending the Train-the-Trainer course.

Consultant Course:
This course is for those with a desire to expand their knowledge in the field of playgrounds and playground safety by understanding child development, child’s play and how it relates to creating a playspace environment that offers challenging and fun play opportunities. Through this course you will also gain a more comprehensive and broader scope of knowledge of playspace standards in Canada and internationally so that you can apply this knowledge to your work.
Course objective: to develop expertise in the area of children’s play and playground safety, thus developing the ability to work with others to make their playspaces meet the needs of children of all ages, interests and abilities through the most efficient means from a practical and financial perspective.
