Program Stream Information

Presentations will focus on meeting the outcomes of seven main program streams that have been developed around the Canadian Vision and Agenda for parks and recreation.

Creating a Socially Inclusive Community

Canada has a rich Aboriginal heritage, a very diverse immigrant population, a number of people living with disabilities and a number of families living in poverty. As such, we are a country dedicated to building a socially inclusive society. Presentations in this stream will focus on awareness of governance, accountability and human rights in today’s business; urban reserves and the coalition for cities against racism, integrating recreation and programming for a culturally diverse population, marketing your programs to the low literate or where language is a barrier, and innovative ways of addressing issues that present barriers to participation.

Addressing Environmental Issues – Greener Lifestyles for Sustainability

Presentations in this stream will identify environmental factors and conditions that affect human health and the health of our communities. Topics will focus on creating great communities, biodiversity indicators such as physical landscape integrity, native species stability, and environmental quality. Sessions will also focus on green living and design and offer practical information about making choices that help sustain the environment.

Creating Community Pride through Park Design and Multi-Use Trails and Pathways

Community pride, engagement, and interaction are fostered through the effective development, maintenance and programming of parks and open space. Presentations in this stream will focus on the relationship between parks infrastructure and the community it serves.

Quality Infrastructure and Facilities

Presented by:

Presentations in this stream will focus on the design, development and maintenance of facilities and recreation infrastructure with consideration given to sustainable buildings, environmentally friendly structures, extending the life of your infrastructure, as well as the consideration for integrated facility planning with one or many community partners.

Increasing Physical Activity

With Canada’s latest report card on obesity, increasing the physical activity of all Canadians is a high priority. Presentations will include such topics as: capacity building, urban design to create walkable communities and encourage physical activity, healthy living strategies, tying medical and recreation practitioners together for “prescriptions”, physical activity initiatives with schools, workplaces and individuals, and specialized fitness programs for people with chronic diseases.

Community Development and Partnerships

Building strong communities that meet the needs of the residents is a greater challenge than ever before. A range of demands, including financial pressures, increased expectations, changing demographics, and other factors tell us that a new approach is important. Community partnerships provide greater value over a longer period for more people serving a greater number of purposes in our community. Partnerships empower and encourage the community to determine which services would maximize that benefit.

Personal and Professional Development

In an ever-changing world, we often struggle to set personal priorities and work hard to adapt to our speed-crazed world. From time to time, we all need to take that moment to tune in to a pace that is healthy for us. About the Conference
