An open letter to federal party leaders during Election 45 from the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association

It’s time to invest in the spaces and programs that bring us together.

We’re calling on the next government to:

1. Deliver a Federal Plan for Recreation and Parks Infrastructure

Arenas, pools, trails, and parks are vital community infrastructure—but too many are outdated or at risk. We need a long-term federal plan to renew what we have and build what we need.

Recreation infrastructure is as vital as roads and bridges if we are to build complete communities.

2. Treat Recreation and Parks as a Smart Economic Choice

Investing in recreation and parks lowers healthcare costs, reduces crime, builds resilience, and creates good jobs. These are not sunk costs—they pay long-term dividends.

Recreation and parks save public dollars and strengthens communities.

3. Commit to Stronger, Healthier Communities

Recreation and parks foster connection, promote mental and physical health, and keep youth engaged and safe. With federal leadership, these programs can do even more.

Recreation and parks are a powerful tool for national wellbeing.

The recreation and parks sector strengthens our communities and supports our wellbeing. Without sustained investment, we risk losing the very spaces that make our lives better.
