The 2015 Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future: Summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC Calls to Action) identified 94 calls to action, many of which the sector can actively support, particularly in education, health, and sport. It is particularly important that the sector ensure their facilities and programs are welcoming and accessible to all, including the Indigenous community.

It is crucial for the sector to understand how it can assist Indigenous Peoples in accessing recreation. This includes creating opportunities for the long-term development of Indigenous athletes, implementing policies and programs that overcome barriers to participation, supporting traditional sports and games, and facilitating environmental stewardship and connections with the land.

Additionally, it is vital for non-Indigenous recreation and parks staff, including coaches and volunteers, to receive training that enables them to support and encourage Indigenous participants and communities in culturally appropriate ways. By actively engaging in these initiatives, the sector can play a significant role in advancing the objectives outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
