National Safe Swimming Recovery Program

In partnership with the Government of Canada, CPRA is working to address the widespread shortage of lifeguards throughout the country.

About the Program

In partnership with the Government of Canada, CPRA is actively implementing the National Safe Swimming Recovery Program. This initiative has been developed to address the widespread shortage of lifeguards throughout the country, adversely affecting the availability of swimming lessons and programs across Canada.

Under this program, CPRA will allocate funding to certify 300 individuals aged 15-30 nationwide with lifeguard and swim instructor certifications. Furthermore, a wage subsidy will be extended to qualifying pools, facilitating the employment of these certified youth and providing them with valuable hands-on experience.

The overarching goal of this initiative is to bolster the staffing levels at pools and waterfronts, ensuring a more extensive provision of swimming lessons and, consequently, reducing the risk of drowning. CPRA firmly believes that acquiring the ability to swim and ensuring safe access to adequately staffed waterfronts and pools are essential components of promoting the health and wellbeing of Canadians. Through the National Safe Swimming Recovery Program, we aim to make a meaningful impact on community safety, youth employment, and aquatic education across the nation.

This program is funded in part by the Government of Canada.
